As well as accommodation, wine estate B&Bs in Varen also give you the opportunity to taste wines from the village’s nine wineries, to enjoy the Bisse de Varone (rambles around Varen) and eat at the Bodmenstübli.
Andy Varonier was our host in Varen, which is located on the southern slopes of the Rhône valley. We enjoyed the magnificent views as he spoke to us.
Andy Varonier is the owner of the cellar that bears his name, and his tasting room is at the entrance to the village. If you are in a group and have booked ahead, he’ll give you the chance to taste his wines in the Vieille Cave de Combe (old Combe cellar), which is still lit by candlelight.
The distinctive feature of Varen is that you can stay in a typical local house that has been renovated by the village’s nine winemakers.
Stay in Varen at the winemakers’ B&B
The association of winemakers acquired and renovated a typical Varen family home to create bed & breakfast accommodation.
“We did all that together, and I’m so very proud of it.” A. Varonier
Since July 2016, B&B Zum Schleif has been welcoming visitors to its accommodation, with rooms that each have their own personality. You’ll get to know the village’s winemakers straight away, because they have all given their names to a bedroom.
The house is from another age: a wonderful living area with exposed beams, extraordinary appeal and breathtaking views.
The breakfast room offers local produce from the moment you wake up, but also stocks the wines made by the nine growers in the village of Varen, that you are free to taste or purchase.
These winemakers seem to have a talent for tourism, because B&B Zum Schleif has been fully booked since it opened. You can stay the night for CHF 75 per person, which includes breakfast and parking.
Andy Varonier recommends that you book your stay well in advance, to be sure of getting a room.
Taste the wines of Varen
Whether you want to taste the wines made by Andy Varonier or the village’s other growers, you can organise a tasting of the various grape varieties. To ensure your tasting runs smoothly, you can work out ahead of time, with the winemaker, what your budget will be, and how many wines you wish to taste. Your winemaker will welcome you in the very best conditions possible, and you are free purchase wines or leave empty-handed, it’s up to you.
