Treat yourself to a taste of Petite Arvine at the Cave du Chavalard and find out about the various wine tourism activities available in the Fully region
Fully is truly magnificent. We visited Gilles Carron-Federer at the Cave du Chavalard in January: I’ll let you imagine how beautiful the scenery was, with the sunshine sparkling over the snow-covered vineyards.
Let’s find out a bit more about the Cave du Chavalard and wine tourism in Fully
Gilles Carron-Federer’s favourite wine
The owner and cellar master from Fully has a twinkle in his eye when he talks about his wines. He has been making almost 30 wines since the 2000s. His favourite is a Petite Arvine that carries the label Fully Grand Cru. It is dry and subtle. Petite Arvine is a fantastic grape variety, producing wines with strong Valais heritage, and Fully is the ultimate Petite Arvine region. You can enjoy it as an aperitif or with freshwater fish from the lake. And why not a fish specific to Valais?
Did you know? The granite soil of Fully gives incredible strength to the vine rootstock. So Petite Arvine grown here makes fruitier and rounder wines.
And here’s something special: just for you as a sneak preview, Mr Carron has announced the new wine that he’s bringing out this year: a barrique-matured Gallotta 2015. He’ll be ready for the open cellars in his canton which are set for May.
And where would you go for a stroll with a glass of Petite Arvine?
Gilles Carron tells us about one of the lakes in Valais: Lake Sorniot, which lies at an altitude of 2,200 m, its cabin and its dam. So that’s one thing you’ll be able to enjoy in the Fully wine region.
There are also numerous walks and other activities to do in the Martigny-Fully region, such as Fondation Gianada, adventure parks, or any of the options available from the local tourist offices (Fully, Martigny).
The Carron-Federer family’s favourite area is the Sentier des vignes, a path winding through the vineyards. It’s perfect for replenishing your energy and discovering the Rhône Valley.
The Fully region is packed with wine tourism activities
As well as the annual open cellar event which takes place each May, the winemakers of Fully put on various other events such as:
- Fully en terrasse: 14 winemakers and cellar masters from Fully organise a food and wine walk through their vineyards.
- Fully Arvine en capitale: all the winemakers in Fully show their Petite Arvine wines at the village hall. This is a wonderful and very interesting event, and presents this grape variety in its many forms.
- And finally, the famous Fête de la chataigne chestnut fair.
What about eating and sleeping in Fully?
Ask and you will receive! Gilles Carron-Federer knows all the great places for B&B and eating in Fully. He’ll be delighted to combine a tasting of his wines with raclette at the Martigny Fromathèque cheese centre.
When you call at the Cave du Chavalard, you can obviously also visit the cellar and taste the wines. Gilles Carron-Federer will be happy to organise a walk through the vineyards for you, and will offer you the chance to enjoy a picnic with wine on a walk following the Sentier des Vignes.
